A Brief History of Broadcasting in Kenya

From a single colonial-era station to hundreds of vibrant voices — Kenya's broadcast journey is a story of liberation, innovation, and relentless growth.

1959
The Birth of Broadcasting
Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) was established by the British colonial administration as the country's first broadcasting station.
1964
Voice of Kenya
After independence, the corporation was renamed Voice of Kenya (VoK), tasked with being a source of information, education, and entertainment.
1989
Liberalisation Begins
VoK was renamed Kenya Broadcasting Corporation. The same year, privately owned Kenya Television Network (KTN) was licensed — ushering in media plurality.
2015
Digital Switchover
Kenya transitioned to digital terrestrial television, leading to an explosion in TV stations and a new era of competition and innovation.
2020
APB Is Born
The Association of Professional Broadcasters was registered under the Societies Act — bringing together veteran and practising broadcasters to champion professionalism and excellence.
Today
200+ Radio Stations • 100+ TV Stations • Millions Online
Kenya's broadcast sector is one of the most dynamic in Africa. APB stands as the bridge between legacy excellence and next-generation innovation.
